Today’s Healthy Blogging lesson is about the commonly misused words there/their and its/it’s. If you don’t have time to watch the video, here is the Cliff’s Notes version:
Misusing these terms sticks out like a sore thumb to many readers. Don’t allow your point to get lost or muddled because your readers are distracted by faulty, unhealthy diction.
- “Their” is used to to signify possession; ex. Their lunches were in the refrigerator.
- “There” is used to signify place; ex. Their lunches are in the refrigerator that is located over there.
- “It’s” is the contracted form of “it is” rather than the possessive you might expect because of the apostrophe; ex. It’s rather cold outside today.
- “Its” is used to signify possession, despite the lack of apostrophe; ex. Its hind leg was in pain, which is why the dog could not walk.
